Charles Town WV American Legion Post 63 Display NMAAHC

We were quite pleased with the display of the flag, charter, and photograph, and accompanying narrative at the “We Return Fighting” exhibit. I can’t begin to imagine what the founders of Post 63 would think about the flag and charter on display at National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). None of this would have been possible without the Tolbert family and the JCBHPS treasuring and preserving them over the past 90 years.

Signed April 30th, 2019 and presented to the Jefferson County NAACP on may 14, 2019, Charles Town Mayor Scott Rogers set forth an official proclamation providing an extremely long overdue apology to the African-American community for the damages caused by the city of Charles Town by slavery, and Jim Crow.

May this proclamation lead to needed healing and racial reconciliation in our community.
